About Reiki

Reiki as a healing technique originated in Japan. Most if not all Reiki practiced in the West, finds its origins in the practice of Mikao Usui, also referred to as Usui Sensei, who was born in 1865 near what is now Nagoya Japan. The practice of Reiki existed previously in Japan but little is known about it. However In 1922 Mikao Usui had a life changing experience while fasting and meditating during a personal retreat on Mount Kurama, where he was enlightened to the reality of Reiki himself. Shortly thereafter he moved to Tokoyo and opened a Reiki clinic where he gave treatments and taught classes. He treated many suffering people after the Great Katno Earthquake of 1923. And he was recognized by the Japanese government and given an award for his efforts.

Reiki has undergone additional refinement since Usui Sensei. Chujuro Hayashi was a student of Usui Sensei, who was also a doctor. He was encouraged by Usui Sensei to open his own clinic and to continue to study and develop Reiki, which he did. In 1936 after being treated at the Hayashi clinic, Mrs. Hawayo Takata, a Hawaiian of Japanese ancestry, received her first training from Dr. Hayashi at his clinic in Japan. She was later initiated by Hayashi Sensei as a Reiki Master in 1938 in Hawaii when he traveled there to help spread understanding of Reiki. Both Hayashi Sensei and Takata Sensei helped to develop and influence the way that Reiki is practiced today.

Holy Fire® is a further refinement of the way that Reiki is taught and practiced that was developed by William Rand of The International Center for Reiki Training in 2014. In 2015 there were additional refinements which led to Holy Fire® II. And in January 2019 further changes resulted in Holy Fire® III.

In a Reiki treatment, the client remains clothed and is usually treated while either lying down or seated. The practitioner uses hand placements. Hands can be placed either on or a few inches away from the client’s body. Most clients typically report feeling much more relaxed after a Reiki session.

About Me

I come from a long line of farmers and people who lived close to the land. However, I knew from an early age that I wasn't interested in pursuing a career in farming. But I did inherit their love of the outdoors and the natural world. In my professional life I have done a number of things from working in the building trades and photography, to system administration and sales. Which has allowed me opportunities to explore new places and different ideas. In addition to Vermont where I grew up and New Hampshire where I now reside, I have spent time in North Carolina, California, and on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts.

I took my first Usui Reiki class in October of 2014. In September 2016, I took the Holy Fire® II ART/Master class with my instructor Lauren Potter. In June of 2018, I took the Holy Fire® II Karuna Reiki® Master class. And in March 2019 I completed the upgrade to Holy Fire® III.

For me practicing Reiki is not only a means to help others. It is also a tool for spiritual growth. Reiki helps me to better understand myself and the path that I travel.

In addition to offering private sessions, I volunteer at Mount Ascutney Hospital. And I am a member of the International Center for Reiki Training Reiki Membership Association.
